Looking at the map of Lithuania, one can see the Akmene region being secluded, however the local people have been seeking for education and creation of art values for ages. Lithuanian encyclopaedia lists hundreds of creators of science, culture and art, deserved for Lithuania by their talents and diligence. Name of the Citizen of Honour of the region is awarded for special merits to the most diligent and prominent persons.
A Monument for
Two sisters writers, classics of Lithuanian literature - Sofija Psibiliauskiene and Marija Lastauskiene, who published their works under a joint pen-name Lazdynu Peleda - were living in Akmene region. In 1864 S. Daukantas, the famous Lithuanian historian, writer and enlighter, was buried in Papile. In 1930 a monument for S. Daukantas, created by famous sculptor V. Grybas, was built in the town square.
J. Miltinis, one of the well-known Lithuanian movie and theater actors, founder and long-term leader of Panevezys drama theater came from this land. Many people emigrated to the Western Europe and USA and disclosed their talents there. One can mention literature history explorer V. Maciunas, creator and actor of amateurs theater J. Jagela. K. Kalakauskis and J. Janusauskas from Akmene become famous American pilots.
A number of gifted actors, artists, composers are continuing works of the past. E. Mazeikis, chief of Lithuanian Air Forces, E.
Pucinskaite, the world cycle race and Tour de France winner were born in Akmene region. Public kyokushin karate club "Energija" has trained European champions O. Jomantaite and D. Imbras as well as a group of Lithuanian champions and winners.
